Tuesday November 21st
Left Vancouver around 9am Stoon-time and after fuel and coffee at the Chilliwack Husky, got up and over the Coquihalla no problem. More fuel at the Sicamous Husky, then on through Revelstoke and Rogers pass (pic) before dropping down into Golden in worsening weather. Shall I stop here for the night? No, I'll get as far as Banff I thought. Bad choice. 10 miles West of field, trucks going the other way start telling us the highway is closed ahead. 1 truck in front of me and around 20 behind as we push on slower and slower. Anyway, I get to a right hand bend with a big enough camber for Eddie the eagle to use and my drive axles start sliding. Only doing around 10mph, so I stop, as you would. So, now I'm completely stopped. At this point, my tractor and trailer, in unison, begin sliding down the camber towards the ditch. "Goodness me!!" I said (actual speech censored). Anyway, luckily enough, there was some slow on the shoulder which stopped me going into the ditch. A Trappers truck which had been behind me and couldn't stop, had no choice but to go around me, which he managed to do much to my relief, before proceeding into the ditch himself around the corner. Out I get and, struggling to even stand on the sheet of ice which used to be a road, proceeded to put my snow chains on. At this point, Brad (the Trappers driver) walked back down, so we left my truck and had a little walk up the hill to see how long the road will be closed and to try to find a wrecker to pull Brad out of the ditch. Nothing doing up there, so back to my truck to get warm as Brads truck is at such an angle that he fears running the engine might just be enough to turn it over completely. It's now midnight.
